I'm sorry you had to do that. But it's a small group, and you need dependable people around you. Like a tripod. If one leg collapses, down goes your camera, crash!

Did you ask him about this and give him a chance to explain? Maybe there is a reason--but he can't put his personal priorities ahead of the group.

Good luck on the search for a new bassist.

Well he never apologised for the gig incident - he didn't like the fact there wasn't a proper running order so we didn't know exactly when we were going to play - but it was a Saturday night and not particularly late! There's been no explanation about the missed practice nor response to my texts. I hope nothing's happened of course but unless he's actually dead he could have got me a message!
