Modou at Drum Camp playing Tyzen with us

1:32 PM - Wed 23 July 2008

Posted in Music
I thought you'd be interested in seeing this video. Modou Diouf is leading us in a tune called Tyzen. We are all playing different parts. I'm playing the chol which is one of the bass accompaniments though I know the other parts too as it's one of my favourite tunes!

Sabar drumming is very specialised in that you have to learn the EXACT rhythm for each drum for each tune. Even if you are playing a "simple" rhythm you have to know exactly where it comes in, where it fits in the overall tune and maintain it. Each song has a different recognisable introduction and signal at the end so you know how to come in and where to stop - you can here both in this example - the intro and the outro. The overall effect is a proper tune.

Many of the tunes have been passed down from generation to generation.

I know about 20 of them, about 3 parts of each so far and it's an endless amount to take in. He only visits each year for a few weeks in the summer which is why I trail around after him trying to learn as much as I can while he's around - it's not written down you learn it by a special language - each of the many sound techniques having a different word.

Different tunes are used for different ceremonies such as births, deaths, naming, calling people together etc. If you watch it at Youtube rather than here it's worth clicking on the "watch in high quality" as the sound and picture are much better that way.

It looks like the rest of you each had a different rhythm as far as the empty hand goes.

That was pretty cool, I must say..:)

How well coordinated all the drummers are! Doesn't seem like a single one got out of tempo. That's a really good corps of drummers.

Yes it does take practice and actually it takes years if you want to learn all the parts but even beginners can join in with just one part at a time to start with!
